The Ford Mustang First Generation comprises the years 1964 to 1973. This was the year of the very first Mustang, coming off the production line in March. The first model is referred to as the '65 Mustang, or more commonly, the '64 ½ model. This is because there was a late 1965 model created, with a V8 and 306 horsepower officially called the Shelby GT350 Street. In late 1964, there was an entirely new line of Mustangs, and the GT's were added. The car took off, and by the time the 1966 model had come out, the company had sold over a million vehicles.

The 1996 model was the first to offer an optional automatic transmission on the Hi-Po V8, but then in 1967, things really heated up. The '67 Mustang was the most well-designed car yet, with a longer nose, three tail lamps and a larger grill and Chassis. The '68 model jumped the HP up to 390.

The body was modified yet again with the 1969 Ford Mustang, and this was most definitely a muscle car. The '71 was 12 inches longer than any previous model and weighed nearly half a ton more. The '72 came out with no real changes, and then in '73, in light of fuel shortage concerns, Ford decided to go back to the drawing board to create a more fuel efficient vehicle.
