The second generation of Ford Mustangs was only a four year span, from 1974 to 1978. However, this was a pivotal year for the Mustang, with a surprise from the company. Rather than increasing the engine size and performance, they reduced it, contrary to what they had done with nearly every previous model. The engines on this model was between 88 and 105 hp, depending on which engine was in the car. This was the Mustang II and people loved the new line. Although the car was well accepted by the general public, some spoke up about wanting the V8 engine back, and in 1975 that's exactly what the Ford Company did.

However, the 1975 model was still nowhere near as powerful as the previous Ford models, and the V8 engine that came with the '75 model was only around 130 hp and did not come with a standard transmission at all. This was the engine that the Ford company named the 5.0, which would become the name for many Ford engines in future generations.

In 1976, the Ford Mustang Cobra II was introduced, and this car had spoilers on both the front and back, and a hood scoop. The car came with racing stripes of either white and blue or gold and black. The car was inspired by the Shelby Mustang, but it had nowhere near the power.

The 1978 model was the King Cobra Mustang special edition, with the 5.0 engine. There were around 5000 of these cars produced, and it wasn't a major change for the company. However, the Cobra Mustang stood out from other Ford models with an air dam and a cobra on the hood.
