Fourteen years comprised the third generation of Ford Mustangs, starting in 1979 and ending in 1993. The marked change for this generation of Mustangs was the Fox body type, which made the car sleeker, lighter and faster. In 1980, the company dropped in 255 cub. Inch V8, in place of the 302, which had around 120 hp.

Even though customers complained about the low power of the new Mustang, Ford dropped the engine to 115 hp the following year, one of the lowest V8 engines ever produced. However, in 1982 the company brought back the 5.0 liter V8, which had around 157hp.          

1983 saw the return of the convertible in the Mustang lineup, for the first time since the '70's. The engine also got up to 175hp. Power went up again in 1985, when the 5.0 liter high output motor was introduced. If the engine was on a car with a manual transmission, it could reach up to 210 hp. Fuel injection was introduced in the 1986 Mustang, and a third brake was added as the result of a new Federal legislation. The Mustang didn't change much from  1986 to 1993, with the exception of the '87 Mustang, which was completely re-styled.
